Peer-reviewed articles, also known as scholarly articles, are reviewed prior to publication to ensure that it meets specific criteria and standards. They are considered to be of higher quality and more trustworthy and possess the following characteristics:

  • Written by experts in their respective fields.
  • Intended for an audience of other researchers and scholars.
  • Undergo a review process by the authors' peers to assess the quality of the work.
  • Use discipline-specific terminology and language.
  • Typically include in-text citations and a bibliography of cited sources.
  • May feature graphs, charts, and other relevant visuals.
  • Published by professional organizations, societies, universities, research centers, or scholarly presses.  

To locate a peer-reviewed article in a library database, limit your search to only peer-reviewed articles.
