To find a book in the library, look for both the location and the call number in the book's catalog record. The location will tell you the area or department in the library where the book is located. If it says "general collection," that means it's on the shelf and able to be checked out. Other location codes include "Ernest Gaines Center," "Louisiana Room" or "University Archives and Manuscripts Collection." Find a complete list of location codes in the Dupré Library Catalog.
The call number will help you locate the book once you've found the correct area in the library where it's located. Books in Dupré Library are assigned a call number based on the Library of Congress classification scheme, which organizes books by subject. Each call number will be a combination of letters and numbers. Use the letters to find the right floor and section of the library, then use the numbers to find the book on the shelf. Contrary to what some people assume, the call numbers aren't arranged alphabetically in the library. You can use the library floor plan to find which call numbers are located where or ask any library staff for help.
